Chair Cardin Statement on Attack that Killed U.S. Troops in Jordan

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued a statement following an attack by Iranian-backed militia resulting in the deaths of three U.S. service members and several dozen reported injured in Jordan.

“Myrna and I mourn the tragic loss of three U.S. service members who were killed today in an Iranian-backed militia attack. We honor their bravery and ultimate sacrifice, and offer our deepest condolences to their families and their communities. We also wish a speedy recovery for the injured American and coalition forces, and pray for their swift return to their loved ones.

“This attack on U.S. and coalition troops in Jordan — our steadfast regional partner — is an escalation, and cannot go unanswered. I support President Biden in a deliberate and proportionate response.”
